Pride Festivals provide a vital point of connection between the local LGBTQIA+ community and local organizations and businesses. In keeping that spirit alive, our Community Spotlight feature will provide a deeper look at these organizations and the important work they do in our communities.
These organizations will be a part of our 2022 Pride festivities as well-- so be sure to learn more and plan to see them at our Pride festival next year!
The Basement on Byers, is a collective art gallery opening on November 5th, in the Wharf District of Staunton, Virginia. The gallery will showcase artworks in a range of mediums and styles from various artists in real-world settings. They are a RAINBOW sponsor for 2022 Staunton Pride!
The Basement on Byers is co-founded by Jillian Marie and Stephen Ruiz, creative artists that operate the gallery on the three principles that:
1) art is not sterile nor does it exist in a vacuum,
2) there is equal value in the connection to an artwork as there is in the collection of an artwork,
3) your invitation to experience art should be unspoken.
In addition to an art gallery with contracted and featured artists, the Basement on Byers will also provide unique services for artists and the broader community including art photography, art supply orders and other custom materials, and a pilot Paint Water Recycling Program. Passionate about community outreach, the Basement on Byers will also host fundraising events in support of local organizations, and offer programs to help make quality art supplies more affordable and available for the community.
The Basement on Byers will host their grand opening event on Friday, November 5th from 6-9pm. Folks can drop in to see the renovated gallery space, have the chance to learn more about the business, and meet with many of the exhibiting artists from the first exhibition.
